We’ve seen the likes of EmRata sport them on the street, and trend-setting companies such as Sandy Liang advocate for their resurgence on the runway. An iteration of knickerbockers, Pedal Pushers—the form-fitting, below-the-knee pant popularized in the 50s and 60s—are back. I’m scared too.
Fortunately, there seems to be a method for tackling an otherwise daunting wardrobe addition. Optimistically, I think pedal pushers have quite a bit of versatility for day-to-night, and could be the perfect spring/summer transitional piece.
Here’s how you should do it: Broadly speaking, assembling an outfit with pedal pushers follows a simple recipe: tiny top, tight pants, elongating shoes. It’s all about the proportions.
The Pants.
If true pedal pushers are simply out of the question, I’d start with an incredibly oversized pair of shorts or capris (see below).
Building an Outfit
Tiny top: sleeves or sleeveless, keep with the tighter fit of the pants. If an outer layer is necessary, an oversized blazer, bomber jacket, or motorcycle jacket compliments the otherwise form-fitting outfit.
Shoes: I think the key to not feeling completely cut off at the knees, so to speak, is in the shoes. kitten heels, chunky platforms, and anything that keeps the line of your leg going work perfectly.
Styling
Accessorize with a smaller bag (shoulder is a perfect proportion, smaller sunnies, and jewelry/hats that suit your style. Nothing crazy, you’re already making a statement with these goddamn pants.
Think Celine Triomphe sunnies, Fendi baguettes, and vintage wristwatches. Colors, prints, patterns, and textures are encouraged.
